Rustic Wood Guitar Stands

A fine guitar is a work of art, as is any well-made musical instrument. These one-of-a-kind wooden guitar stands are designed for the musician who wants to display their instrument on something nicer than tubular metal and plastic.

The Process

My wood is primarily apple, which I collect from local orchards after they do their seasonal pruning.

When necessary, I remove bark with a drawknife and shaving horse, then smooth the wood with a cabinet scraper. I do some shaping with various rasps. I use a random orbit sander if a spot needs aggressive sanding, but mostly I sand by hand.

I use Lee Valley round tenon cutters, and I use a drill press or a hand drill to make the holes for my joints. A small amount of polyurethane glue is applied to each joint, and some critical joints are reinforced with cross-pins.

For a finish I use Tried & True Danish Oil, which is a food-grade (FDA approved), pure linseed oil. I apply and buff the finish by hand.
